Invisalign vs Fixed Braces

May 3, 2022 | Glandwr News

It is understandable if you have questions about different treatment options if you are considering straightening your teeth. Fixed braces and Invisalign aligners are the two most common orthodontic treatments, and they differ in a few ways. Let’s take a look at these differences closely.

Cosmetic factors

When it comes to braces, one of the main concerns people have is how they will look.

The Invisalign braces are very discrete. With clear and flexible aligners, orthodontic treatment is barely noticeable.

As the name implies, fixed braces are made up of wires attached to brackets that are bonded to each tooth. The wire is then held in place with small elastic bands on each bracket.

Cost

Teeth straightening treatment costs vary greatly depending on the type of braces you have and your individual orthodontic needs. Having a consultation with your dentist is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for braces. In this consultation, they will discuss with you suitable options for teeth straightening and the costs involved.

Fixed vs removable

The two most common types of braces are fixed and removable. The wires and brackets of fixed braces are permanently bonded to your teeth, which means your orthodontist can only remove them once treatment has ended. Fixed braces are appealing to some people because they do not have to worry about putting them in and taking them out.

An Invisalign aligner is a removable brace. They can be taken out while eating, brushing, and flossing. Removable braces are preferred by some individuals since they make daily activities easier. In order to ensure that Invisalign treatment is effective, it is essential that you wear your aligners for as many hours as possible each day. This means that you must remember to put them back in once you have finished brushing or eating.

What is recommended

People with complex orthodontic problems, such as excessive overcrowding of the teeth or a very deep overbite, are often recommended to use traditional fixed braces. Traditional braces provide precise and reliable results that can correct even the most complex orthodontic issues. Fixed braces are also useful for treating small alignment issues.

A range of cases can be treated with Invisalign, including some complex ones, but if you have severe orthodontic issues, you will probably need a fixed brace. At your initial consultation, your dentist can tell you if Invisalign braces are right for you.

Comfort

It will take some time to get used to braces, no matter which type you choose. A straighter smile can’t be achieved without a little bit of discomfort.

Fixed braces can cause irritation to the cheeks and gums when they are first fitted. After a while though, you will get used to wearing them.

Invisalign treatment doesn’t rub the way fixed braces do, however, when you put your aligners in, you can expect to feel some discomfort as you get used to wearing them. The more you wear the aligners, the more comfortable and natural they will feel.

Oral hygiene

Fixed braces can be a bit harder to keep clean. You will need to make sure you clean them very carefully and precisely. It’s always good to make regular appointments with your hygienist to ensure everything is on track.

If you have an Invisalign treatment, you can remove the aligners to eat, brush and floss, so your oral hygiene routine doesn’t really have to change. You have to make sure you clean your aligners every day with water and you should brush them gently with a toothbrush to keep them clean. You should wear your aligner for 22 hours a day. If you fail to do this then the treatment won’t be effective.
