When did Flossing Day start?

The day has been celebrated since the year 2000, but dental floss has been on the market since the late 1890s. It was originally made from silk threads, but towards the end of WWII nylon became more prevalent.

Celebrating the day is very simple – just make sure that you floss your teeth before you go to bed. You can even include as part of your morning routine too, seeing as there is a special day for it after all.

Why should we floss every day?

Flossing is a vital part of our everyday oral health routine as it is effective for removing plaque from between our teeth. Otherwise, this plaque can build up, causing us to develop tooth decay or gum disease.

If plaque is left on your teeth for an extended amount of time, it can also turn into a hard substance named tartar. This cannot be removed with just brushing or flossing, you will require a dental hygienist session, so prevention is key.

When should I floss my teeth?

Flossing your teeth just once or twice a day is great, and you can do it whenever you want – a reel of floss is small enough to keep in your bag! You can floss after you’ve eaten a meal, or during your morning or evening brush. Choose a routine which suits your schedule.

What type of floss should I use?

The size gap between peoples teeth are all different, so depending on the size, there are different things you can use.

For smaller gaps, the floss will be suitable. If you have larger gaps, consider using interdental brushes or dental tape. Interdental brushes come in many sizes, so start small and work your way up if you feel you need a larger size.

How should I floss my teeth?

Gently slide the floss between your teeth, and lower the floss just below the gum line to get the best results. Your gums may bleed the first time, however, this is normal. If they continue to bleed after a week of use, consider booking an appointment with us as you may have an issue.
