So, the Christmas celebrations are over and hopefully, the boxes of sweets are all gone too! It is now time to start thinking about what we want to keep on top of in 2021. If you’ve slipped into bad habits recently, here are some resolutions you can follow this year.
- Get into a good oral health routine.
Prevention is the best cure when it comes to oral health. Brushing twice a day and flossing using flossing tape or interdental brushes once a day will help to prevent many issues.
If you’ve become a bit lazy with your routine make this the year for change. You can watch an oral hygiene demonstration by our therapist Mari in English here and in Welsh here. Mari shows the best brushing and flossing techniques to help you kick-start your first resolution.
- Cut back on the sugary snacks!
December was the month for over-indulgence, and many people began January with the goal of eating healthier – but this rarely lasts.
Research has shown that the more we eat sugar foods, the more likely we’re going to develop dental health problems like tooth decay. You can make simple swaps to lower your sugar such as switching a soft drink to a glass of water and having fruit for breakfast instead of sugary cereals.
- Put out the cigarettes.
Tobacco creates a whole bunch of oral health problems like tooth staining, bad breath, gum disease, and in extreme cases, tooth loss and oral cancer. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your body.
Consider chewing gum as part of your efforts to stop smoking. It may help with kicking the habit but also has the added benefit of stimulating saliva flow, washing away bacteria and neutralising acids after food.
- Stay away from foods which stain your teeth.
If you’re after a brighter and whiter smile you can cut back on the things which stain your teeth. This includes tea, coffee, red wine, beetroot and another veg that can be used as a natural dye, curries including turmeric, and soy sauce.
If you want to boost your goal to white teeth, you can opt for teeth whitening. Fill in our cosmetic interest form for a consultation.
Get your friends and family involved in making a positive change for your oral health this year. If your household all has the same goal then it will be much easier to implement it into your life. You deserve a dazzling confident smile – so make it happen!
